St Louis Open QF: Hussein Gatecrashes Last Four

Egypt’s Aly Hussein continued his knockout run at the St Louis Open presented by Mosby Building Arts, as he downed No. 3 seed Christopher Gordon to make it into the semi-finals of the tournament.

Hussein came into the Challenger 10 level competition, which is being played at the Missouri Athletic Club, as an unseeded player, and after overcoming compatriot and No.6 seed Seif Shenawy in the second round, he came up against Gordon in the last eight.

The Egyptian took the opening game of his quarter final contest with the American 11-6, but saw Gordon fight back to delight the home crowd and level the match. From there, though, it was all Hussein, as he went on to win the next two games to book his place in the semi-finals in St Louis. The Egyptian will now face the tournament’s top seed, Rory Stewart, in the last four, after the Scot downed Brazil’s Diego Gobbi in straight games.

The other semi-final will see an all-English battle between No.2 seed Charlie Lee and No.4 seed Curtis Malik after the pair came through their respective quarter final clashes in four games. Malik got the better of Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal, while Lee defeated the Czech Republic’s Daniel Mekbib.

The semi-finals of the St Louis Open presented by Mosby Building Arts will take place on Friday, September 23, where the final four will do battle in aiming to reach the finals of the Challenger 10 level competition at the Missouri Athletic Club.
