6 November 2022

England’s Perry Malik caused an upset in the semi-finals of the Sport Central Open by Underhill Geomatics, downing the tournament’s No.2 seed to make it through to the final.

The Englishman took on Mexico’s Alejandro Reyes in the last four of the Challenger 5 level competition in Richmond, Canada on Saturday afternoon, and he took the first game of their contest on a tie-break, before going on to double his advantage after two games.

Malik then saw the Mexican fight back to level the match. Reyes won both the third and fourth games by 11-9 scorelines to send the contest into a deciding game. That fifth game went all the way to a tie-break, with the Englishman eventually claiming it 15-13 to secure the win, after 86 minutes of action.

He will now take on the tournament’s top seed, Alfredo Avila, on Sunday afternoon, after the Mexican came form behind to defeat Jeremias Azana.
