Silva & Nasser Win May Challenger Tour Player of the Month Awards

5 June 2024

16-year-old Brazilian Laura Silva has won the PSA Challenger Tour Women’s Player of the Month Award for May, with Egypt’s Mohamed Nasser claiming the men’s prize.

Silva is already a Brazilian national champion but had only played one Challenger Tour event in her career coming into the month of May.

Four weeks later, she had not only tripled her tally of Challenger Tour events, but also notched her first title, winning the Clube de Campo Figueiras Porto Ferreira Squash Open.

That title came via a hard-fought 3-2 win over fellow 16-year-old Fiorella Gatti in the final, capping an impressive week in which Silva did not lose a game en route to the final.

She also finished as runner-up in the 6K ECP Open a few days earlier, despite it being her first PSA event of any kind in 2024, and will head into next season as one of the most exciting prospects to watch on Tour.

The men’s award, meanwhile, was won by 20-year-old Egyptian Mohamed Nasser, after he claimed his maiden Challenger Tour title.

The Cairo native came into May in good form, having reached the final in two of his three most recent Challenger Tour events, but a first piece of silverware had proved elusive.

That all changed in Johor, Malaysia, though as Nasser marched his way to glory at the ACE Challenger 6K, battling through a tough, five-game tussle with Korea’s Ryu Jeongmin in round two, before reeling off three straight-games win in a row to clinch the title.
