Sam Todd: 2022 Year In Review

2 January 2023

As we hit the New Year, we have spoken to some of the Tour’s stars of 2022. Englishman Sam Todd is our focus in today’s piece.

Todd came into the year as the World No.73, and won three titles over the course of the last twelve months, as well as featuring at the British Open as one of the tournament’s wildcards.

He took two victories in the United States, winning the E.M. Noll Classic and the Concourse Athletic Club Open, before taking the title on home soil at the St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club Open, his last appearance of the year.

Todd now occupies his highest career ranking of World No.66, and will be looking to push on with more wins in 2023.

See what the Englishman had to say about his year here…

“2022 has been good, [a good] end to the year. I thought I started off quite slow, but then as I started to plan my training a little bit better and didn’t really put too much pressure on myself in the tournaments, I started to feel like I was getting the better results

“Then [I] got a few titles here and there towards the end of the year, and then just sort of want to progress through this to the next year.

On being a wildcard at the Allam British Open…

“Yeah, it’s always good being on that court [in Hull] because it’s really close to home. So I get a lot of people from here that come up to watch, which is really great to have the crowd on my side

“Again, I’ve played a lot of, like, the top players, so it’s just really great to get on court with them and learn from them and improve. So then I can take that into my matches when I’m playing on the Challenger Tour, and then hopefully when I get up there [to the World Tour], I can then start to progress from that.

On winning in the United States this year…

“It’s been really great. That [the Concourse Athletic Club Open] was a really great tournament. I’ve been in a few finals of the Challenger 10 level events but never seemed to get over the line.

So then when I won that, it just felt like a big relief just to get it off my shoulders and then just to then take it forward to the next tournament where I didn’t win it, but I got to the semis of a Challenger 30 level tournament [the Life Time Chicago Open], which was just good to carry on that form.

“And then I felt like it gave me a lot of positive to then take this forward and then to training and then keep going from that.

On balancing his time between the UK and the USA…

I quite like it. It’s a good environment over there [in the United States]. I get on [court] with some different players and my cousin lives there, my girlfriend lives out there. So there’s like a few places where I can stay.

“So it’s kind of good to have like a month or so out there and then come back here and then get on training with different people here as well. I’m enjoying sort of traveling around and then getting on court with new people as well.

On winning in Weybridge at the end of 2022…

“To get that title was really good. Carrying on to get another Challenger 10 level win was great. Obviously, like I said, good end to the year.

“So then after that I can then just relax, have a little bit of time off towards Christmas and then get the training back up and then carry on this form going into next year, feeling quite strong and positive.

On his goals for 2023 and beyond…

“I want to keep getting these titles and getting a few wins over these big players. So then try and get myself up there around that top 50 level, just so that I can try and get into these big events more often.

“And then I feel like once I do that, then I’ll start to then kind of creep my way forward. But it’s just sort of like sticking with it, trying to get through this little part.

“But then by not putting too much pressure on yourself, trying to do that and forcing it, just play, keep enjoying what you’re doing and then hopefully the wins will come.”
