Rochester ProAm RD2: Wildcard Yanez To Face Defending Champion

Wildcard Mario Yanez took down the No.5 seed on Thursday evening in Rochester to reach the quarter finals, where he will now face reigning champion Aly Hussein.

Yanez, who won this event back in 2018, came in as the tournament’s wildcard. He beat Pakistani Ahsan Ayaz on the opening day in straight games, and did the same against No.5 seed Connor Turk on Thursday at the University of Rochester.

He will now take on Egypt’s Aly Hussein, who won this title in 2022. Hussein, the No.2 seed for this week’s event, got the better of England’s Jonah Bryant in a lengthy contest. Although he won in straight games, the pair were on court for 70 minutes, with the third game going to a tie-break.

On his way to the title last year, Hussein got the better of India’s Veer Chotrani. The Indian also caused an upset in yesterday’s action, as he defeated No.4 seed Mohamed Nasser in straight games. He will now take on Brazil’s Vinicius Leao Rodrigues in a battle between two unseeded players, after the Brazilian downed No.8 seed Harley Lam.

Hong Kong’s Matthew Lai caused the day’s fourth and final upset, as he defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Nabil. The Hongkonger won in straight games to book his quarter finals spot, where he will now take on the tournament’s top seed, Egypt’s Yassin Elshafei. Argentina’s Jeremias Azana and Brazil’s Diego Gobbi will meet in the other quarter final on Friday evening.
