Richardson Wealth Van Lawn Open: Khan Beats Lake to Win Title

13 November 2023

Faraz Khan upset No.1 seed Nathan Lake to claim the biggest title of his career, winning the Richardson Wealth Van Lawn Open.

Khan was the No.2 seed and entered this final as the underdog, ranked 17 places below the Englishman.

He was looking to become the second straight American winner of this event, following Timothy Brownell’s victory last year, as well as targeting a first title since 2021, having been a beaten finalist at two tournaments already this season.

It was Lake, though, who made the better start, taking game one 13-11 to put himself on top.

The 31-year-old had not dropped a game en route to the final, while Khan had come through four-game tussles in two of his three matches, and the American ensured this one would go at least four games by levelling up in the second, winning it 11-9.

He then moved within one game of victory by cruising through the third, 11-5, before securing the title with another 11-9 scoreline in game four.

The 15k title was Khan’s fifth on the PSA tour and his biggest to date, having previously won a pair of 10k events in Atlanta and Austin.

Both players will now head to Hong Kong to compete in The Hong Kong Football Club Open, where Lake is the No.8 seed so will enter in round two, while Khan will play local player Henry Leung in round one.

Result: Men’s Final

[2] Faraz Khan (USA) bt [1] Nathan Lake (ENG) 3-1: 11-13, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 (43m)
