Rhode Island Open: Top Seed Mohamed Claims Victory

14 November 2022

Egypt’s World No.15 Farida Mohamed won the Rhode Island Open this week, coming through her four matches without dropping a game.

The Egyptian came into the Challenger 20 level competition as the top seed, and after receiving a bye through the opening round’s action, she took on compatriot Fayrouz Aboelkheir in the second round. Thanks to a second game tie-break going her way, Mohamed won in straight games in 33 minutes to move through to the last eight.

There, she took on England’s Millie Tomlinson, and once again, she needed to go deep into a tie-break to keep it to three. She claimed the third game 15-13 in a straight games win. The Egyptian then got the better of India’s Akanksha Salunkhe in just 22 minutes in the semi-finals to move through to the final at PVD Squash.

In the final, Mohamed took on home favourite Marina Stefanoni, after the American had taken down three seeded players to make the last match of the tournament. The Egyptian won the first two games, before a lengthy third game saw 38 points played. In the end, Mohamed won it 20-18 to win in straight games, and to claim the title without dropping a game in Rhode Island.
