Quique Squash Brazil Open: Pollak Scores Only Upset on Day One in Cianorte

21-year-old Brazilian Yuri Pollak produced the only upset on day one of the Quique Squash Brazil Open as he overcame compatriot Rhuan Sousa in a five game battle to reach round two. Pollak lost a convincing first game 11-2 but responded well to level up, taking game two 11-4. The unseeded player then found himself behind once more as Sousa captured the third game to take a 2-1 lead. Pollak wasn’t deterred however as he battled back one again and after taking the match into a fifth, Pollak dominated the fifth game to win 3-2 in 56 minutes.

Chile’s Lucas Perez was another player who needed all five games to progress to the second round as he overcame Brazil’s Gustavo Pizatto in 75 minutes. Two brutal first games were shared by both players, then the complete opposite occurred in the following two games as both players again took a game each 11-2, 11-1. The competetive rallies continued in the fifth game and it was Perez who managed to hang on well to win 11-9 in the decider.

The rest of the 9/16 seeds were victorious on day one and alongside surprise winner Pollak, they will join the top eight seeds in round two with all 16 players looking for quarter final spots in the Challenger 6 event.
