PSNS President’s Trophy RD1: Several Seeds Gone On Opening Day

The first round of the PSNS President’s Trophy saw several seeds knocked out, as action got underway at the Challenger 5 level competition.

The biggest surprise of the day saw women’s wildcard Yu Jie knock out the No.4 seed, and fellow Malaysian, Ooi Kah Yan. Jie came through a tough second game, winning it 13-11, and although she then lost the third, the young Malaysian was able to regroup, winning the fourth to take the victory.

India’s Rathika Suthanthira Seelan also caused an upset on the opening day in Negeri Sembilan. She defeated No.5 seed Leia Lee Zi Fang, beating the Singaporean in straight games, to set up a clash with Jie in the last eight.

Egypt’s Habiba Hany and Nour Megahed also downed seeds on the first day of the tournament. Hany defeated No.2 seed Xin Ying Yee, fighting back after losing the opening game of their contest 14-12. She then won the second game on a tie-break 12-10, before taking control of the match, winning in four games.

She is joined in the quarter finals by compatriot Megahed. Her fellow Egyptian defeated Malaysia’s Sahasmithaa Nityanandan, the tournament’s No.8 seed. They were only on court for 16 minutes, with Megahed taking a commanding straight games victory.

There was just the one surprise in the men’s event, as Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran overcame No.7 seed Amir Amirul. Chandaran dropped just 11 points in a confident 11-3, 11-4, 11-4 victory, to book his place in the quarter finals.
