PSA Cognac RD2: Quartet Secure Surprise Results

The surprises kept coming at the PSA Cognac on Thursday afternoon, with a quartet of matches seeing a surprise victor in the second round.

The biggest of those, once again, was wildcard Robertino Pezzota. The Argentine, who came through the opening round as well. Got the better of Austrian No.1 and tournament No.3 seed Aqeel Rehman. Pezzota won in straight games, 11-6, 11-6, 11-5 to move through to the last eight of the competition.

There was also a trio of surprises in the women’s event, with Switzerland’s Ambre Allinckx taking out the No.2 seed. The Swiss star claimed the title at the Open Feminin du Jeu de Paume earlier this month, where she was also unseeded like this week. In Cognac, she is into the last eight after beating Egypt’s Nadeen Kotb. Allinckx lost the first 17-15, but fought back to win a second game tie-break 14-12. From there, she was on form, winning the next two games comfortably to move through to the quarter finals.

She will be joined by Frenchwoman Ella Galova, who overcame compatriot and No.4 seed Lea Barbeau in a five-game battle. She found herself behind after three games, but fought through to win the fourth 11-9, before also taking the fifth game to win and to book her spot in the last eight.

Isabel McCullough lost in the opening round, but was awarded the ‘Lucky Loser’ place after a late withdrawal, and she has taken full advantage. The Englishwoman got the better of Portugal’s Catarina Nunes with her second chance in Cognac, winning in five games to move into the quarter finals.
