Pembroke Management Open de Montreal: Lobban Beats Lake to Lift 13th Tour Title

12 February 2024

Greg Lobban capped an impressive week with a dominant display in the Pembroke Management Open de Montreal final, beating Nathan Lake 3-0 to claim the trophy.

The two players went into the match separated by just two spots in the world rankings, at No.23 and No.25 respectively, and having an almost identical wealth of experience, with Lobban having played 378 career matches on the PSA Tour, compared to Lake’s 376.

The English southpaw had won their last head-to-head encounter, back in 2021, after three previous defeats to the Scot, but it was Lobban who came out on top in this one, winning 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 in 35 minutes.

All three games followed a similar pattern, with little to separate the two players in the opening rallies, before Lobban pulled clear in the closing stages.

Both both games one and three ended 11-8 to the Scot having been locked at 7-7, while game two was slightly more one-sided, with Lobban stringing together seven points out of eight to move from 4-4 to 11-5.

Victory ends a dominant week for the No.1 seed, who dropped only one game en route to glory, securing the 13th Tour title of his career, and his first since 2022.

For Lake, this defeat is his fourth straight loss in a PSA Tour final, but a runner-up finish still represents a solid showing to back up his run to the last 16 of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions a fortnight ago.

Result: Men’s Final

[1] Greg Lobban (SCO) bt [2] Nathan Lake (ENG) 3-0: 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 (35m)
