Paraguay Open SF: Azana and Romiglio Into All-Argentine Final

The final of the Paraguay Open will be an all-Argentine affair, with Leandro Romiglio and Jeremias Azana set to battle it out for the title.

Romiglio, the Argentine No.1 and tournament’s top seed, took on Switzerland’s Yannick Wilhelmi in the last four. The pair did battle in the final of the Regatas Resistencia Open last week, with the Argentine winning on home soil.

He would get the better of Wilhelmi once again on Friday evening in Asuncion. The pair were level after two games, with the Swiss No.3 levelling the contest. However, from there, Romiglio was able to regain control, and he won in four to book his place into a second final in as many weeks.

The Argentine will face compatriot Jeremias Azana, after the No.8 seed got the better of No.4 seed Tom Walsh in a five-game epic that lasted nearly an hour and a half. It could have been much easier for the Argentinian No.2, as he took a two-game lead.

However, Walsh fought back brilliantly, taking the third game 11-9. He then carried the momentum into the fourth game to win it 11-8 to send the match into a deciding game. The fifth would eventually go the way of Azana, who won it 11-7 to secure victory after 88 minutes, and to move through to the final.

The final of the Paraguay Open, between Argentina’s Jeremias Azana and Leandro Romiglio, will take place on Saturday, May 20. The final will be streamed live on the TigoSports YouTube channel.
