Mozart Open SF: Herbert and Gadola Through To Final

1 April 2023

England’s Simon Herbert and Switzerland’s Robin Gadola will do battle in the final of the Mozart Open in Salzburg, Austria on Saturday.

The Englishman came into the Challenger 5 level competition as the tournament’s top seed. He took on 2019 champion Miko Aijanen in the last four and the pair did battle for more than an hour, with the contest going deep into a fifth game.

Herbert won the opening game of their tie 11-7, before the Finn fought back to level the match. The same pattern followed across the next two games to send the match into a decider, where both men had their chances to take the victory. In the end, Herbert claimed it 12-10 to scrape through and reach the final in Salzburg.

He will now play No.5 seed Robin Gadola, after he came through an all-Swiss battle with compatriot Yannick Wilhelmi. Gadola won the opening two games of their contest, before seeing the No.4 seed fight back to win the third game 11-5. However, it would be the 28-year-old that would go through, winning the fourth game 11-7.

The final of the Mozart Open will take place on Saturday, April 1. You can keep up to date with daily updates from the tournament on the PSA Challenger Tour’s Twitter and Facebook. Live scores are available on the PSA World Tour website here.
