Morrinsville Open: Damming Downs Chileshe Brothers For Glory

Dutch No.1 Rowan Damming got the better of both Chileshe brothers to win the Harcourts KDRE Morrinsville Open in New Zealand.

Damming came into the competition as the No.3 seed, and already with two wins to his name, having won the QPCC Premiere Squash Tournament and the Tour de las Americas ECP Open already this season.

The reigning World Junior Champion started his week against New Zealand junior Oliver Dunbar, and the Dutchman won in straight games to get his campaign underway. He then defeated No.5 seed Elijah Thomas before coming up against the first of the Chileshe brothers.

Damming took on No.2 seed Temwa Chileshe in the semi-finals in Morrinsville, and lost the opening game of their contest 12-10. However, he fought back to win the next three games, to move through to the final of the Challenger 5 level competition.

He then came up against older brother Lwamba, the tournament’s top seed and defending champion, in the final on Sunday in Morrinsville. Damming was in control throughout the final, winning in straight games to secure his third title of the season.
