Maspeth Squash Open SF: Walsh and Rehman To Do Battle

25 June 2023

Top seeds Tom Walsh and Aqeel Rehman will meet in the final of the Maspeth Squash Open on Sunday in New York City.

The pair came into the Challenger 5 level competition as the highest seeded players, and Walsh had to battle past tournament promoter Mohamed Nabil to get the win on semi-finals day.

The Englishman won the opening tow games of their contest, and looked set to book his place with ease. However, Nabil fought back strongly, winning the third 11-5, before then drawing level after the fourth game. The deciding fifth game went all the way to a tie-break, and it was Walsh who eventually came through it, winning it 12-10 to secure the victory.

He will now face Austria’s Aqeel Rehman, the No.2 seed, in the final on Sunday. The Austrian No.1 took on Canadian Liam Marrison in the last four, and ran out into a two-game lead. Marrison battled back to win the third game 11-2, but Rehman regrouped, winning the fourth 11-8 to move through to the final.

The final of the Maspeth Squash Open takes place on Sunday, June 25, with Walsh and Rehman doing battle for the title. You can keep up to date with daily updates from the tournament on the PSA Challenger Tour’s Twitter and Facebook
