Manitoba Open: Cardenas Downs Baillargeon For Title

Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas lifted the Oasis Pools & Spas Manitoba Open title on Sunday, after beating David Baillargeon in the final in Winnipeg.

The Mexican came into the Challenger 10 level competition as the top seed, and started his week in the second round after receiving a bye through the opening day’s action.

He won his opening three matches in straight games, starting off with a comfortable victory against Brazil’s Diego Gobbi. Wins against compatriot Leo Vargas and Spain’s Ivan Perez followed to put himself through to the final in Winnipeg.

The final saw him take on No.2 seed and home favourite David Baillargeon. It was the Canadian that took the opening game quite easily, winning it 11-4. From there, though, Cardenas was able to fight back. He won the second and third comfortably, before then sneaking the fourth on a tie-break to claim his first title of the season.
