LT Chicago Open RD1: Wildcard Sedky Among American Trio Through

The Life Time Chicago Open Walker & Dunlop – The Hussain Family got underway on Wednesday, and wildcard Reeham Sedky caused the biggest upset of the day, as one of three Americans through to the second round on home soil.

Sedky was one of three wildcards in the women’s event, along with Pakistan’s Sana Bahadar and Egyptian Hana Elashry. The American took on Mexican Diana Garcia, and came through her opening match of the women’s Challenger 10 level competition in straight games. She won 11-7, 12-10, 11-4 to book her spot in the last 16, where she will take on No.2 seed Hana Moataz.

Elsewhere in the women’s event, Japan’s Erisa Sano Herring, England’s Margot Prow and Egyptian Sohaila Ismail also caused seeding upsets. Herring came from two games down to defeat Switzerland’s Ambre Allinckx to make it through to the second round. Meanwhile, Prow downed Canadian Hannah Blatt and Ismail got the better of Bruna Marchesi Petrillo.

The other two Americans to make it through from the opening day’s action came in the men’s Challenger 30 level event. Spencer Lovejoy got the better of Egypt’a Omar El Torkey, while Timothy Brownell defeated Indian Abhishek Agarwal in straight games. The pair will now play the top two seeds in the tournament. Lovejoy will face World No.11 Victor Crouin, while Brownell takes on Mexico’s Cesar Salazar in the second round.

Canadian Nick Sachvie and Egypt’s Seif Shenawy, both winners on Tour at the weekend, continued their good form into the first round in Chicago. The Canadian downed England’s Mark Broekman in straight games, while Shenawy had to go the distance to overcome the challenge of Nigerian Babatunde Ajagbe.
