Louisville Open QF: Egypt’s Hussein and Shenawy Make Semis

9 September 2022

The Egyptian duo of Aly Hussein and Seif Shenawy caused upsets on the third day of the Sam Aguiar Louisville Open, with the pair both taking out higher-ranked opposition to make it through to the last four of the tournament.

Hussein came into the Challenger 10 level competition unseeded, and had already gotten the better of No.8 seed Guilherme Melo in the second round. In the quarters, the young Egyptian came up against the Czech Republic’s Daniel Mekbib, the tournament’s No.4 seed. Hussein dropped just 13 points across the entirety of the match, one he controlled, to win 11-3, 11-4, 11-6 in 46 minutes. He will now face No.2 seed Alfredo Avila, after the Mexican beat Brazil’s Diego Gobbi in straight games.

The other surprise result of the quarter finals in Louisville saw Egypt’s Seif Shenawy overcome the challenge of the USA’s Andrew Douglas. The American was the No.3 seed for the event, but in a hotly-contested affair, it was the Egyptian that came out on top, winning 11-6, 11-5, 11-9 to advance to the last four, where he will take on another American, in the tournament’s top seed, Timothy Brownell.

The semi-finals of the Challenger 10 level tournament will take place on Friday, September 9, with the last four aiming to reach Saturday’s finals at the Louisville Boat Club. You can keep up to date with live scores from the tournament here.
