Louisville Open: Brownell Takes Victory On Home Soil

10 September 2022

American Timothy Brownell claimed his second victory of 2022 on home soil with a confident win over Mexico’s Alfredo Avila in the final of the Sam Aguiar Louisville Open on Saturday evening in Louisville, Kentucky.

Brownell, the World No.68, came into the Challenger 10 level tournament as the top seed, and was aiming for his second win of the year after his title run at the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions Challenger in New York City back in May, where he then reached the second round of the Gold level J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions a few days later.

His run in Louisville started in the second round, after receiving a bye through the opening day’s action, where he got the better of Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal in a four-game contest that lasted just shy of the hour mark. He then defeated another Pakistani in Muhammad Ashab Irfan, this time in straight games.

The semi-finals saw Brownell overcome Egypt’s Seif Shenawy, the tournament’s No.5 seed, in just 28 minutes, and dropping just 13 points in the process, to move through to the final, where he took on Mexico’s Avila, already a winner on Tour this season,

However, the Mexican came into the final off the back of a 100-minute battle in the last four, and Brownell used his freshness to take the victory. He ran to into a two-game lead, and although Avila won the third to bring himself back into the contest, it was the American that took the title, winning 11-4, 11-8, 7-11, 11-6 in exactly 50 minutes, to secure his second crown of the year.
