Hong Kong Challenge Cup QF: Wong and Long Gatecrash Semis

The semi-finals of the Hong Kong Squash Challenge Cup will see two unseeded players in action, with Chung Yat Long and Heng Wai Wong making it through to the last four.

Malaysia’s Wong overcame the tournament’s No.4 seed on Wednesday evening, and she then took down the No.6 seed on Thursday. Egypt’s Menna Walid was the next to be beaten, with the Malaysian getting the job done in deciding fifth game, taking the win 12-10 on a tie-break.

She joins the top three seeds in the women’s semi-finals. Compatriot Ainaa Amani, along with the Hong Kong duo of Cheng Nga Ching and Ching Hei Fung, all made it through to the last four, with Fung having to come from 2-1 down to win in five.

In the men’s event, Chung Yat Long took down Robert Andrew Garcia in a match that guaranteed an unseeded player making it through to the last four. The Hongkonger won in straight games to make it a trio of home players into the semi-finals.

He will be joined by top seed Tang Ming Hong and fellow Hongkonger Matthew Lai, but will take on Frenchman Toufik Mekhalfi in the semi-finals, the only European left in the competition. 

The semis of the Challenger 5 level tournament will take place on Friday, March 17.
