HCL SRFI Jodhpur RD2: Indian Trio Cause Upsets

The Bodhi International School saw more surprises on day two, as a trio of Indians downed seeded players to move through to the quarter finals.

Sunayna Kuruvilla, who was ranked inside the top 100 less than a year ago, took on No.7 seed Salma El Aify on the second day of competition in Jodhpur. She needed just 21 minutes to get the job done, securing an 11-8, 11-2, 11-8 victory, moving through to the last eight.

In the men’s event, both Velavan Senthilkumar and Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu took surprise wins in the second round. The former dropped just 11 points in a comfortable three-game victory over Malaysia’s Hafiz Zhafri, while Singh Sandhu defeated Hong Kong’s Harley Lam, the No.6 seed, also in straight games.

That unseeded trio will be joined by another three Indians in the quarter finals in Jodhpur. Men’s No.2 seed Abhay Singh had no problems in his second round encounter, while Akanksha Salunkhe and Tanvi Khanna also made it through their last 16 matches on the second day.

The quarter finals of the 4th HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Jodhpur Leg will take place on Saturday, November 19. The last eight in each draw will go head-to-head for places in the semi-finals of the Challenger 10 level tournament.
