HCL SRFI Chennai RD2: Endo and El Rihany Cause Upsets

The second day of the 4th HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Chennai Leg saw a couple of upsets, as Japan’s Tomotaka Endo and Egypt’s Amina El Rihany both knocked out seeded players to make it through to the last eight.

Japan’s Endo took on No.8 seed Sandeep Ramachandran in the second round of the Challenger 10 level competition, and the pair went the distance, with the Japanese No.3 having to come from 2-1 down to take victory in the deciding game of their contest.

Endo won the first game 11-8, but then saw the Indian take both the second and third games, including the third on a tie-break 12-10, to flip the match on its head. The Japanese man had to fight, and he did, winning the fourth game 11-6, before scraping through in the decider, winning it 11-9 to book his spot in the last eight in Chennai.

Elsewhere in the men’s event, Egypt’s Mohamed Nasser, the No.7 seed for the competition, also had to come from behind to win in five against Hong Kong’s Lam Shing Fung. He won the last two games of their second round contest with 11-7 and 11-8 scorelines, to advance to the quarter finals.

In the women’s tournament , Egypt’s Amina El Rihany was the only player to cause a seeding upset on the second day of competition, as she got the better of Indian No.8 seed Anjali Semwal in straight games. The Egyptian dropped just six points in a 15-minute rout of her opponent, winning 11-1, 11-2, 11-3 o make the quarters in Chennai.

The quarter finals of the Challenger 10 level 4th HCL SRFI Indian Tour – Chennai Leg will take place on Wednesday, September 21, with the last eight aiming to make it through to the semi-finals at the Indian Squash Academy.
