Edmonton Squash Club Open QF: Chotrani Joins Top Three Seeds In Semis

1 April 2023

The quarter finals of the Edmonton Squash Club Open took place on Friday evening, with India’s Veer Chotrani taking out another seed.

On the opening day of the Challenger 5 level competition, the Indian defeated No.4 seed Joseph White in four games. He followed that up by knocking out one of two Canadians remaining in the draw, Connor Turk, on Friday.

The Indian came in to the week ranked 52 places below Turk, the No.6 seed for the competition. However, he took the victory in the quarter finals in straight games. The first two games were pretty close, but Chotrani was able to come through both to hold a two-game advantage, and he carried his momentum on into the third, which he claimed comfortably, 11-4.

He will now take on Malaysia’s Sanjay Jeeva in the semi-finals on Saturday. The Malaysian, who is the No.2 seed for the event, also won in straight games yesterday. He downed Hong Kong’s Harley Lam 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 to book his last four place.

The other semi-final will see top seed Viktor Byrtus take on Brazil’s Diego Gobbi. Byrtus made it through after coming from behind to get the better of Hong Kong’s Matthew Lai. Meanwhile, the No.3 seed had to go the distance in his last eight contest with Canadian Liam Marrison.

The semi-finals in Edmonton will take place on Saturday, April 1, and you can keep up to date with daily updates from the tournament on the PSA Challenger Tour’s Twitter and Facebook. Live scores are available on the PSA World Tour website here.
