ECP Open RD2: Mometto Joins Seeds In Quarters

Brazil’s Pedro Mometto is through to the quarter finals of the ECP Open on home soil, after downing the tournament’s No.8 seed.

The Brazilian took on Paraguayan No.1 Francesco Marcantonio in the second round of the Challenger 5 competition in Sao Paulo, and won in straight games. The first was tight, with Mometto taking it 11-9, before he cruised to victory with comfortable wins in the second and third games.

Mometto will now face the tournament’s top seed, the USA’s Christopher Gordon, in the next round. The American downed Colombia’s Sebastian Rodriguez Rayo in straight games to book his quarter final place.

Two other Brazilians made it through to the last eight of the tournament, and will now take each other on. Guilherme Melo and Diego Gobbi will go head-to-head for a place in the last four on Friday afternoon.

Gobbi reached the quarter finals after downing compatriot Vitor Vieira in straight games, dropping just eight points on the way to a solid 11-3, 11-3, 11-2 victory. Meanwhile, Melo overcame the challenge of Junior Christovam, another Brazilian, winning in three after taking the third in a tie-break.

Elsewhere, the Colombian duo of Edgar Ramirez Bautista and Andres Herrera will do battle in the last eight. The other quarter final match-up will see Belgium’s Joeri Hapers and reigning World Junior Champion Rowan Damming go head-to-head.
