ECP Open QF: Mometto Beats Top Seed Gordon To Advance

After beating seeded opposition in the second round, Brazil’s Pedro Mometto caused another upset, as he knocked out the tournament’s top seed to reach the semi-finals.

Mometto, featuring on home soil at the ECP Open in Sao Paulo, took on American Christopher Gordon on Friday evening. He came through their contest in straight games to move through to the semi-finals with ease, causing a big upset.

He will be joined in the last four by compatriot Diego Gobbi, after the tournament No.4 seed downed fellow Brazilian Guilherme Melo, the runner-up of this event last year. The pair went the distance in their quarter final contest, with Gobbi winning the fifth game of their match 11-9 to take the win after 80 minutes of play.

Gobbi will take on Colombia’s Andres Herrera, the No.2 seed, in the last four. Herrera came up against compatriot Edgar Ramirez Bautista in the quarter finals, with the No.6 seed having to retire after two games, unable to carry no at full fitness.

Meanwhile, Mometto will now face Dutchman Rowan Damming, the reigning World Junior Champion, after he defeated Belgium’s Joeri Hapers in straight games to knock out the tournament’s No.3 seed.
