Eastside Open: Gadola and Ching Victorious In Hobart

19 September 2022

The Eastside Open came to its conclusion on Sunday in Hobart, Australia, with Switzerland’s Robin Gadola and Hong Kong’s Ching Hei Fung both winning their respective finals in fifth-game deciders.

Switzerland’s Gadola came into the tournament as the No.2 seed, and after four-game victories over both Australia’s Bradley Fullick and new Zealand’s No.10 seed Joel Arscott, he then took on Aussie Nicholas Calvert, the No.8 seed for the competition.

Their quarter final lasted 54 minutes, with the Swiss No.3 having to fight back after losing the first game 11-9. He came through to win the next three games, including the fourth 11-3, to advance to the semi-finals. His last four contest against No.16 seed Elijah Thomas was more comfortable, although he did have to scrape through a second game tie-break 13-11 on route to a straight games win.

The final was much different, as he came up against another Kiwi, in No.3 seed Temwa Chileshe. After winning the first game 11-9, he then found himself 2-1 down to the New Zealander, after Chileshe won the second on a tie-break, before also taking the third 11-9. Gadola had to regroup, and he did so perfectly, to take the fourth 11-6. He had the momentum going into the deciding game, and he rolled with it, eventually taking victory after 92 minutes on court in Hobart.

He was joined in the winners’ circle by Hong Kong’s Ching Hei Fung, who was able to come through the Challenger 3 level event to claim her maiden Tour crown. After receiving a bye through the opening round, the Hongkonger got the better of Australian Jennifer Condie in straight games to get her campaign underway.

Fung then downed another Australian, in No.7 seed Maggy Marshall, in the semi-finals, before moving into the final again Cheng Nga Ching, her fellow Hongkonger and the tournament’s top seed. The pair did battle over five games, and it was Fung who came out on top, winning the decider 11-8 to claim her maiden Tour title.
