Dynam Cup RD2: Endo Causes Upset To Increase Japanese Hopes

The second round of the Dynam Cup SQ-Cube Open took place on Wednesday in Yokohama, with Tomotaka Endo causing an upset on home soil.

Endo took on No.8 seed Harley Lam in the second round and he was able to come through the contest in straight games. He won both the first and third games 11-7, but the second was much closer. It went to a tie-break, but the Japanese No.2 was able to win it 12-10 to keep the momentum in his favour.

He will be joined in the quarter finals by two other home hopes, as Ryunosuke Tsukue and Risa Sugimoto both took wins on day two. Tsukue, the two-time defending champion, dropped just 14 points in his second round clash.

The 2021 and 2022 winner of the Dynam Cup, he was playing his first match of this year’s competition. He ran out a comfortable victor, winning 11-8, 11-2, 11-4 in less than half an hour to advance to the quarter finals.

Sugimoto will be the lone Japanese player left in the women’s draw. The tournament’s No.7 seed defeated Macau’s Gigi Yeung in straight games to reach the last eight. She will now take on No.2 seed Cheng Nga Ching for a place in the semis.

Elsewhere on day two, Korea’s Yura Choe and Sang Eun Park also took surprise wins. The duo got the better of Hong Kong’s Wai Sze Wing and Singapore’s Leia Lee Zi Fang in straight games, respectively, to reach the last eight in Yokohama.
