David Lloyd Purley Open: Withington and Malik Victorious Again

13 November 2022

England’s Finnlay Withington and Torrie Malik claimed the titles at the Telsa Media David Lloyd Purley Open on Sunday afternoon.

The pair, who were victorious at the the British National Junior Championships sat the end of October, both reigned supreme on home soil once again this week in Croydon.

Withington came into the tournament as the No.6 seed, and his week in Croydon started with a battle. He had to go the distance to overcome the challenge of Brazil’s Vinicius Leao Rodrigues. The Englishman led twice, but saw Rodrigues level on both occasions. In a rapid-fire encounter, Withington took the fifth game to win in just 48 minutes.

He then followed that up with a quarter final victory over the tournament’s No.2 seed, Kuwait’s Ammar Altamimi, winning in four. The semi-finals saw Withington take on New Zealand’s Joel Arscott, with the Englishman dropping just 15 points en route to a straight games victory.

The junior then took on compatriot Perry Malik in the final on Sunday, and after two games, the pair were level. From there, Withington took control of the contest, winning the third game 11-7, before then also claiming the fourth game 11-5 to secure his maiden Tour title.

The women’s event was won by England’s Torrie Malik, with the 19-year-old securing her second title of the month, after she won her maiden Tour crown in Brno last week.

She started with a win against Scotland’s Catherine Holland, before then defeating Portugal’s Sofia Aveiro Pita in the quarter finals, taking just 18 minutes to get the job done. Malik then overcame compatriot Kiera Marshall in the last four, also winning in straight games.

The final saw a repeat of October’s British National Junior Championship, with Malik taking on Asia Harris, and once again, it went the way of the former. She took a two-game lead in the final, but saw Harris fight back to win the third game 12-10. However, Malik fought back to win the fourth by the same scoreline, to claim her second title in as many weeks.
