Czech Open RD1: Svec Downs Jaume On Home Soil

Home favourite Martin Svec delighted the crowd in Brno by beating Bernat Jaume to move through to the second round of the Czech Open on Thursday.

The Czech Republic No.1 took on the Spaniard in the opening round, and was the underdog for their contest. The World No.77 came through to win in straight games on home soil, taking the victory 11-8, 11-8, 11-7 to advance to the last 16, where he will now face England’s George Parker.

Welshman Emyr Evans took a big win in an all-British battle against Nick Wall in the opening round. The World No.114 got the better of the Englishman in five games, winning the decider 11-7 to claim the win after 70 minutes. He will now face another Englishman, in Nathan Lake, in the second round.

Colombia’s Juan Camilo Vargas had to survive in five in his opening day contest, coming from two games down to defeated Spain’s Ivan Perez. The Spaniard started strongly, and move out into a two game lead, before the Colombian fought back. Vargas took both the third and fourth games with an 11-8 scoreline, before then winning the deciding fifth game 11-7 to book his spot in the second round.

Elsewhere, the English duo of Sam Todd and Curtis Malik both took straight games victories, and will be joined in the last 16 by Frenchman Auguste Dussourd, Portugal’s Rui Soares and another Colombian in Ronald Palomino.

The second round of the Czech Open will take place on Friday, November 4 in Brno, with the seeded players coming into the draw for the men’s event. The women’s event will also get underway. You can keep up to date with live scores from the event here.
