Costa Rica Open RD1: Vargas Causes Sole Upset

The opening round of the SACC Costa Rica Open saw Mexico’s Leo Vargas take the lone upset, as he got the better of compatriot Rodolfo Vega.

The Santa Ana Country Club is playing host to the Challenger 5 level tournament, and Vargas came in as one of several Mexicans in the draw. He took on another in the No.6 seed, and he needed just 28 minutes to get past his compatriot, winning 11-6, 11-8, 11-2.

Elsewhere on the opening day, Guatemala’s Luis Quisquinay and Mexico’s Allan Nunez both had to win in five games. The Guatemalan regrouped after losing the fourth to defeat Maceo Levy, while Nunez defeated Colombia’s Santiago Orozco.

The Kiwi duo of William Donnelly and Elijah Thomas both made their way into the last four of the competition, joining top seed Josue Enriquez, Paraguay’s Francesco Marcantonio and Argentinian No.1 Jeremias Azana.

The quarter finals of the Costa Rica Open will take place on Thursday, November 10. The women’s event at the Challenger 5 level competition gets underway, joining the men’s draw. You can keep up to date with live scores from the tournament here.
