Costa North Coast Open: Finalists decided in Coffs Harbour

19 August 2023

The finalists of the 2023 Costa North Coast Open have been decided in Coffs Harbour with several upsets taking place across the quarter finals and semi-finals.

The only seedings upset in the men’s quarter finals came from Malaysia’s Darren Pragasam who overcame the leading Australian in the draw and No.4 seed Joseph White in four games. The Aussie got off to a great start as he took game one 11-6. From there however, the Malaysian found top form and used his incredible speed to attack White in the front two corners and make it impossible for White to find winners. Pragasam won the next three games to cause an upset and reach the semis. All other top four seeds safely secured their places.

There were two upsets on quarter finals day in the women’s event which both came in the top half of the draw. Former World No.10 Joshna Chinappa found herself 2-0 down against compatriot Tanvi Khanna and despite recovering to level at 2-2, Khanna found more in the deciding game to win 11-8. The same occurred in the all-Australian match up between Sarah Cardwell and Alex Haydon. The lower seeded Haydon established a 2-0 lead and despite Cardwell winning the next two games to equalise, Haydon took a convincing fifth game 11-6. They would be joined by top seed Jess Turnbull and No.3 seed Chan Yiwen in the final four.

Men’s top seed Adeen Idrakie found top form in his semi-final clash against compatriot Darren Pragasam as he won in 36 minutes. The World No.69 took game one 11-6 but then had to dig deep to win 14-12, 11-9 to win in straight games. Idrakie will be joined in the final by No.3 seed Velevan Senthilkumar, who produced a top performance to defeat No.2 seed Ivan Yuen in straight games, with the Malaysian not able to get over 6 points in any one game.

India’s Tanvi Khanna continued her impressive form as she overcame the other surprise semi-finalist Alex Haydon in another five game battle. Khanna trailed 2-1 to Haydon but battled back strongly to regain control of the match and display her superb front court skill to win 11-5, 11-7 in the final two games to move into the final.

Khanna’s opponent in the final will be No.3 seed Chan Yiwen, who scored an upset over top seed Jess Turnbull. The match was closely contested throughout with never much between the two players, but it was the Malaysian who managed to play the big points well and as the score reached 1-1, she won games three and four 11-8, 11-6 to reach the final.
