Costa Del Sol D2: Wildcard Pezzota Into Final Against Clain

Argentinian wildcard Robertino Pezzota is through to the final of the Open Costa Del Sol, where he will take on Frenchman Edwin Clain for the title.

The former World No.73 made his return to the Tour after three years away last month, and made the quarters of the PSA Cognac. In just his second appearance on his comeback, Pezzota is into his first final since winning the Paraguay Open on the Tour de las Americas in 2019.

On the second day of this week’s event in Fuengirola, Pezzota had to come through two battles. He started Friday’s action with a tricky three-game victory over Spain’s Pablo Quintana Estevez, the No.7 seed, before then having to go the distance in the semis.

The Argentine took on another Spaniard, in No.5 seed Augusto Ortigosa, and twice took the lead. That was thanks to winning both the first and third games by 11-9 scorelines. However, he saw Oritgosa fight back on both occasions, including winning the fourth 13-11. The 90-minute contest eventually saw Pezzota win through, 11-7 in the fifth, to make his first final in three years.

He will take on Frenchman Edwin Clain in that final, after the No.2 seed spent just 47 minutes on court across his two matches on day two in Fuengirola. Despite going to four games against Belgian Lowie Delbeke, he was only on court for half an hour, before then dropping just nine points in a commanding win over Spain’s Javier Martin in the last four.

The final of the Open Costa Del Sol will take place on Saturday, December 17 at the Complejo Polideportivo Municipal Elola in Fuengirola, Spain. Either Robertino Pezzota or Edwin Clain will take home the last title on European soil in 2022.
