Copa Mexico Temazcal: Top Seed Reyes Takes Maiden Title

20 September 2022

Top seed Alejandro Reyes came through a spellbinding final at the Copa Mexico Temazcal this weekend to take home his maiden Tour title, beating Jorge Gomez in a five-game thriller.

Reyes came into the event as the top seed, and the highest-ranked player in the draw, and started his week with a comfortable victory over Canadian Charles De La Riva, spending just 19 minutes on court. He then overcame the challenge of the Czech Republic’s Petr Nohel, the No.7 seed, in three as well, making it through to the semi-finals.

The Mexican then took on Egypt’s No.3 seed Abdelrahman Nassar in the last four of the competition, and went two games up, but saw the Egyptian pull one back after taking the third on a tie-break 13-11. Reyes regrouped, and showed some of his best stuff in the fourth to win the match 3-1 to book his place in the final.

The final was an all-Mexican battle between Reyes and the unseeded Jorge Gomez, who had already beaten three seeded players to make it to the last match of the tournament. Gomez then went two games ahead in the final, but Reyes was able to fight back to win the third 11-9, and from there he had the momentum, taking the next two games as well to win in five, claiming his maiden Tour title.
