Concourse Athletic Club Open RD1: Bryant Downs Khan To Advance

The Concourse Athletic Club Open got underway on Wednesday, with England’s Jonah Bryant causing the day’s sole upset.

Bryant took on Pakistan’s Abdul Malik Khan in the opening round of the Challenger 10 level competition, and he was in complete control throughout. He took the first game 11-2 and from there, he carried the momentum through the next tow games to win in three.

He will be joined in the second round by Finnlay Withington, another member of the England quartet that won the WSF World junior Team Championships in Nancy earlier this year. The Englishman defeated another Pakistani, in Mehran Javed. He won in straight games in 35 minutes to advance through to the last 16 in Atlanta.

A third Englishman, in Lewis Doughty, also made his way into the second round. Doughty overcame one of three wildcards, USA’s Felipe Pantle, to advance, winning in straight games in just over half an hour. Elsewhere, Jamie Ruggiero made sure there would be an American in the quarter finals, as he set up a clash with compatriot Faraz Khan in the last 16.

The second round of the Concourse Athletic Club Open will take place on Thursday, October 13. The top eight seeds will make their debuts at the event, with the likes of Faraz Khan and Sam Todd both in action.
