Cleveland SC Open: Ng Claims Seventh Tour Title

4 October 2022

Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng secured the Cleveland Skating Club Open title, the joint biggest of his career, on Monday evening.

Ng, the World No.26, came into the Challenger 30 level tournament as the top seed, and received a bye through the opening round’s action. He then got his campaign underway with a four-game victory over England’s Curtis Malik in the last 16.

The Malaysian then overcame both American Timothy Brownell and Mexico’s Leonel Cardenas in straight games. He dropped just 13 points in the quarter finals, before going two better in the semis. He allowed the Mexican to take just 11 points in an 11-5, 11-3, 11-3 win, to book his place in the final.

The final saw Ng take on Frenchman Sebastien Bonmalais for the Challenger 30 level crown. He won the first game 11-9, but saw the tournament’s No.3 seed fight back to level the match. Another 11-9 scoreline went the Malaysian’s way in the third game, and he held that momentum through the fourth game.

Ng took the fourth game comfortably to secure a 3-1 victory, and take his first Tour title since 2019. The Challenger 30 level crown is also his joint-biggest victory, following a win at the Malaysian Open on home soil three years ago.
