Charlottesville Open: Douglas & Vargas Upset Seedings to Gatecrash Quarter Finals

The quarter finalists of the Charlottesville Open Challenger 30 event have been confirmed in Virgina, USA yesterday with home player Andrew Douglas and Colombia’s Juan Camillo Vargas producing upsets to advance.

Andrew Douglas secured his quarter final place after beating No.5 seed Cesar Salazar in straight games. Douglas started in great style and was dominant in the opening game, winning 11-4. He maintained control of the match as he took the following games 11-8, 11-5 to compete the win in 32 minutes.

The other upset of the day came from Colombia’s Juan Camillo Vargas as he downed the event’s No.2 seed Sebastien Bonmalais, also in straight games. Vargas was fast out the blocks as he opened up with an 11-3 game one victory. Bonmalais was more competetive in the following games but was still unable to stop the momentum of Vargas. The 9/16 seed took the second and third games 11-9, 11-8 to compete the upset in 41 minutes.

Vargas will be up against USA’s seed Timothy Brownell in the quarter finals after the American came back from 2-1 down to overcome compatriot Faraz Khan. The pair played out three tight games to open the contest with Khan taking games two and three 11-9, 11-8 to need just one more to advance. Brownell responded in string style to take control of the contest, winning 11-2, 11-5 to win 3-2.

England’s Nick Wall was another player who needed all five games to advance to final eight. He was up against PSA Tour veteran Chris Gordon and despite finding himself 2-1 down after losing two tiebreaks, Wall remained calm and stuck to his strengths. The No.6 seed took control of the T and didn’t let Gordon get in front of him as he took the fourth and fifth games.
