Challenger Tour Weekly Preview: Sole Women’s Event In Austria

20 March 2023

After a couple of busy weeks on Tour, there is just the one tournament taking place over the next seven days, as the Tour returns to Austria.

Last week, Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk secured the biggest win of her career, as she claimed the St James Women’s 20K Classic title, while compatriot Tang Ming Hong was one of two winners at the Hong Kong Squash PSA Challenge Cup at the Hong Kong Cricket Club.

The women’s winner at the Challenger 5 level competition was Malaysia’s Ainaa Amani, while the Oasis Pools & Spas Manitoba Open is yet to be decided, with Leonel Cardenas and David Baillargeon in the final.

Here is what is taking place on Tour this week…

Mozart Open (Women’s)
The only competition on the Challenger Tour this week will be the women’s event at the Mozart Open. The tournament will run for two successive weeks in the Austrian city of Salzburg, with the men’s draw playing at the same venue next week.

England’s Torrie Malik will be the top seed for the women’s competition, which starts on Wednesday, March 22. She wil be aiming to secure a fourth title of the season, after three Challenger 3 level victories already in the 2022-2023 campaign.

Egypt’s Malak Khafagy will be her nearest challenger, and after winning her maiden Tour title at the Odense Open earlier this month, she will be full of confidence. Compatriot Nadeen Kotb and Germany’s Katerina Tycova, who made the final of the Austrian Open in 2022, will make up the rest of the top four seeds.

Austrian No.1 Jacqueline Peychar will be in action on home soil this week, as one of two home hopes, with Sabrina Rehman being the tournament’s wildcard.

This Week’s Schedule
Mozart Open (Women’s): Wednesday, March 22 – Saturday, March 25
