Challenger Tour Roundup: Wildcard Elliot Hunt

The opening round of the Goodfellow Classic concluded yesterday as eight players scored wins to move into round to of the Challenger 9 event at the Toronto Athletic Club.

Wildcard Elliot Hunt scored one of two upsets in round one as he overcame compatriot Cory McCartney to advance. The 24-year-old was in fine form as he claimed the opening game 11-6. From there, Hunt looked the better player in all parts as he claimed the next two games 11-3 to upset the seedings and move into the second round.

Mexico’s Cesar Segundo Corona scored the other upset of the round as he defeated Taylor Carrick in four games. The Mexican secured a crucial 2-0 lead after winning the opening two games 11-7, 11-8. Despite Carrick showing signs of a comeback after winning the third game 11-7, Corona responded well to regain his composure and win the fourth game 11-6.

Corona was joined by compatriots Edgar Zayas and Bryan Cueto in scoring opening day wins as they moved past Wasey Maqsood and Titouan Isambard respectively.

The top seeds now enter the fray on day two with top seed Abhay seed now facing surprise winner Hunt and Corona coming up against compatriot and No.2 seed Alfredo Avila.
