Challenger Tour Round-Up: Walid & Heikal to Meet in Edmonton, El Torkey to Play Carter for Hinckley Title

24 March 2024

The Bee-Clean Edmonton Squash Club Women’s Open 2024

Egyptian duo Menna Walid and Nour Heikal will go head-to-head for The Bee-Clean Edmonton Squash Club Women’s Open title, after winning their respective semi-finals 3-0.

Walid and Heikal, both 20 and both hailing from Alexandria, are the top two seeds at this event, and have only dropped one game between them all week, that being in Walid’s 3-1 quarter-final victory over Toby Tse.

The No.1 seed was pushed hard by England’s Kiera Marshall in all three games of their semi-final encounter, but the 20-year-old came out on top in all three, winning 11-7, 12-10, 11-9 in 32 minutes.

That result was followed by a win for Heikal over Ireland’s Hannah Craig in the second semi-final.

After taking the first two games 11-5, 11-6, the Egyptian was made to earn her victory in the third, closing it out 11-9 to set up what will be a first ever PSA Tour meeting with Walid, with the trophy on the line.

The Aldi Hinckley Challenger 2024

Omar El Torkey continued his impressive run at the The Aldi Hinckley Challenger, knocking out No.4 seed Rhys Evans in a five-game thriller on semi-finals day.

The unseeded Egyptian knocked out No.8 seed Paul Broadberry in round two and then second seed Joel Arscott in the last eight, and will now play for the trophy having come through an 83-minute epic with the Welsh 20-year-old, clinching victory 11-9 in the fifth.

The fifth game took close to 15 minutes, but that was relatively short compared to the 25-minute third, which El Torkey won 12-10 after the players had split the first two.

Evans did respond well by taking game four 11-5 and then found himself 7-6 up in the decider, but was unable to convert that position into victory.

Instead, El Torkey will now play England’s Jared Carter, who upset top seed Hafiz Zhafri to reach his fourth final in his last five events.

The Derby-born player has fallen short in each of those previous three finals this season, but will be hoping to make it fourth time lucky in Hinckley, after beating the Malaysian lefty 11-3, 6-11, 11-6, 11-5.

The final of The Aldi Hinckley Challenger will stream live on the SQUASHTV Live Streaming YouTube channel from 4pm GMT today. Click here to watch.
