Challenger Tour Round-Up: Bryant Wins Second Straight Title, Mometto Edges Curitiba Epic

20 November 2023

Bondi Open

No.3 seed Bryan Lim Tze Kang claimed his fourth PSA Tour title, beating fourth seed Hafiz Zhafri in an all-Malaysian men’s final at the Bondi Open.

The 27-year-old had knocked out No.1 seed Ravindu Laksiri in the semi-finals, and rounded off a dominant week with a 3-0 win over his compatriot, securing the crown having dropped just one game in the tournament.

The women’s final was also an all-Malaysian affair, and also won by the player who ousted the top seed in the semi-finals, Sehveetrraa Kumar.

Still just 18 years of age, Kumar had never reached a PSA Tour final before this event, but went all the way in Sydney, coming through in five games against the unseeded Thanusaa Uthrian, winning 7-11, 11-9, 11-2, 9-11, 11-6 in 46 minutes.

Telsa Media David Lloyd Purley Open

British junior champion Jonah Bryant continued his winning streak by claiming his second straight PSA Tour title, lifting the Telsa Media David Lloyd Purley Open trophy in London.

The 18-year-old came into this event having won the British Junior Championships in Sheffield last month, after winning his first PSA Tour crown in Stourbridge just a few weeks earlier.

He carried that impressive form into this event, where he secured glory without losing a game all week, beating top seed Robert Downer in the final.

British junior girl’s champion Amelie Haworth was also in the women’s final, but she was unable to claim what would have been her maiden PSA Tour title, losing out to top seed Alison Thomson 3-1.

Curitiba Squash Center Brazil Open

Brazil’s Pedro Mometto came through a 92-minute epic to beat Francesco Marcantonio and win the Curitiba Squash Center Brazil Open.

Mometto, the No.3 seed, knocked out top seed Diego Gobbi 3-1 in the semi-finals, but found life far tougher in a final which swung one way and then the other.

He took the first and third games but was pegged back by the Paraguayan both times, before eventually securing victory 11-9 in the fifth.

Victory represents a milestone moment for Mometto as his first PSA Tour title, capping off an impressive couple of years which has seen him climb more than 600 places in the rankings.
