BRESS Breda Open RD1: Dutch Quartet Into Last 16

The BRESS Breda Open got underway on Wednesday, and a quartet of Dutch players scored surprise wins in the women’s event.

The Challenger 5 level tournament began at the BRESS Sportcenter in the Dutch city of Breda, and there were a total of 26 matches played on a very busy opening day at the event.

Megan van Drongelen took on Dutch counterpart Juliette Permentier on the opening day, taking down the tournament’s No.9 seed. She lost the opening two games of that match by an 11-6 scoreline, but fought back brilliantly to win in five. She won the third 11-8, before then cruising to victory in the end, booking her second round spot.

Renske Huntelaar, Elfi Markus and Daniek Krukkert also won in five, with the three all coming from a game down to win 3-2. Huntelaar came back from 2-1 down to defeat No.8 seed Erin Classen, in the biggest seeding upset of the day’s play.

Krukkert also came from 2-1 down in her first round contests in Breda, beating No.12 seed Jasmin Kalar of England. Meanwhile, Markus defeated Ukraine’s Milena Velychko, battling back after losing a third game tie-break to win 3-2.

In the meet’s draw, wildcard Scott Gillanders took the day’s big win. He downed Frenchman Laszlo Godde in straight games to book his place in the second round. Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muhwati was the other member of the 16 unseeded players to score a first round victory, beating Spain’s Marc Lopez in five games.

Top seeds Robin Gadola and Elliott Morris Devred both made the last 16 of the tournament comfortably, with the Swiss man downing Dutch wildcard Marc ter Sluis in four. Devred also won in four, with the Welshman beating Spaniard Augusto Ortigosa.
