Bremer Schlussel: Herbert Beats Gamal To Lift Fourth Career Title

It was a battle between the top two seeds at the Achim-Bade Squash & Fitness Centre as Egypt’s Mazen Gamal and England’s Simon Herbert contested the final of the Bremer Schlussel 2023 Challenger 10 event.

Herbert recovered from 2-0 down against No.3 seed Yassin Elshafei in the semi-finals to reach the final in dramatic fashion. The Englishman showed no signs of any fatigue I the final as he got off to the perfect start as he raced out to a 7-1 lead in the opening game. Gamal started to find his way back into the game and almost stole the game as it ended up 11-9 to Herbert.

With 16 years difference between the two players, the week’s matches looked to be taking their toll on the 37 year old Egyptian as he struggled to match the pace of Herbert as the 21-year-old fired the ball around the court, attacking the front corners constantly. Herbert captured the second game 11-3 and carried his form into the third game to seal it 11-5 and claim his fourth PSA title and second of the year.
