2nd Kuwait International SF: Home Hope Almezayen To Face Top Seed ElShafei

23 November 2022

The final of the 2nd Kuwait International Squash Championship is set, with Kuwaiti Abdullah Almezayen causing yet another upset to go through, where he will face top seed Yassin Elshafei.

Almezayen, who caused several surprise results in the first Kuwaiti event earlier this season, has done the exact same this week. Three of the top five seeds have been beaten by the Kuwaiti, with No.4 seed Seif Shenawy the latest victim.

The Kuwaiti took the first game on a tie-break 12-10, and from there, he was in cruise control on his home court. The World No.281, who has been as high as World No.33 in the past, dropped just eight more points across the next two games to book his place in the final.

Elshafei, the top seed for the Challenger 10 level competition in Hawally, came up against wildcard Falah Mohammad, the surprise package of the event. It looked like the Kuwaiti was on for another upset, after winning the first game 11-6, but from there, the Egyptian was able to take control. He went on to win the next three games for a 3-1 success, to book his spot in Wednesday’s final.

The final of the 2nd Kuwait International Squash Championship, which will be played between Abdullah Almezayen and Yassin Elshafei, will take place on Wednesday, November 23 with the winner of the event being crowned in Hawally.
