Esporte Clube Pinheiros Open: Enriquez Downs Top Two To Win

16 May 2022

Guatemala’s Josue Enriquez claimed his second title on Tour this week, coming through the field, and beating the top two seeds to win the Esporte Clube Pinheiros Open in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The Guatemalan came into the Challenger 5 level tournament as the No.3 seed, and he started with a victory over compatriot Luis Quisquinay, winning the third game on a tie-break to secure a straight games success. He then had to come from behind to down Argentina’s Jeremias Azana in five games, after falling behind in the third after losing a tie-break.

In the semi-finals, Enriquez came up against the tournament’s No.2 seed, Brazil’s Diego Gobbi, and he started strongly, winning the first on a tie-break before then doubling his lead with an easy win in the second game. The Brazilian fought back to send the match into a decider, but it was eventually Enriquez that won in five to book his spot in the final in Sao Paulo.

He then faced off against another home favourite in the final, in top seed Guilherme Melo. The Guatemalan required just three games to secure the title, winning 11-9, 11-6, 12-10 against Melo to secure another surprise win, and take his second victory on Tour, his first since 2018.
