EC Pinheiros Open RD1: Azana Causes Sole Upset

The opening round of the Esporte Club Pinheiros Open took place on Thursday evening in Sao Paulo, with Argentina’s Jeremias Azana causing the only upsets of the opening day’s play as he made his way through to the last eight of the competition.

The Challenger 5 level event started on Thursday, and Azana, the World No.293, overcame Brazil’s No.8 seed Pedro Mometto to make it into the quarter finals. The Argentinian won in straight games, 11-6, 11-5, 11-8, to advance to the last eight where he will now face Guatemalan No.1 Josue Enriquez.

The rest of the seeded players safely made it through to the last eight of the competition, with top seed Guilherme Melo and compatriot Diego Gobbi both advancing without any trouble.

The quarter finals of the Challenger 5 level tournament in Sao Paulo will take place on Friday, May 13, with the last eight remaining going head-to-head for places in the semi-finals of the competition.
