Gawad and Aboulmakarim Win Karachi Championships

20 March 2022

Former World No.1 Karim Abdel Gawad and fellow Egyptian Nour Aboulmakarim are the winners of the 2022 Karachi Open Squash Championships after they overcame Youssef Soliman and Chan Sin Yuk in the men’s and women’s finals, respectively.

Gawad, the current World No.13, has captured the 24th PSA title of his career after taking out World No.15 Soliman by an 11-5, 11-9, 11-6 scoreline in 50 minutes to get his hands on the PSA World Tour Bronze title.

Former World Champion Gawad was seeded at No.1 for the event held at the DA Creek Club in Karachi and disposed of local favourite Asim Khan, Hong Kong’s Henry Leung and former World Championship runner-up Omar Mosaad en route to the final.

It’s Gawad’s first title since the Channel VAS Championships at St George’s Hill in 2019.

The women’s final featured two surprise finalists as No.8 seed Aboulmakarim took on the unseeded Chan as they aimed to win the PSA Challenger Tour 20 final.

Aboulmakarim had taken out the No.5 seed, Georgia Adderley, in the semi finals, while Chan had beaten the No.3, No.6 and No.7 seeds on her way to the title decider.

Aboulmakarim had performed well to take the opening game, only to see Chan fight back to level. The woman from Hong Kong then held an 8-6 lead in the third, however she was sadly forced to retire from the match due to injury, handing Aboulmakarim her second PSA title.
