Sutton Coldfield International: Todd and Mead Take Titles

The English duo of Sam Todd and Alicia Mead have claimed the titles at the Aston and Fincher Sutton Coldfield International, with the pair both beating compatriots in their respective finals.

Both players came into the tournament having already won a Challenger Tour event earlier this year. Todd had won in Pontefract in July, while Mead secured the AS Insurances crown, also in the Yorkshire town, back in May.

Mead started her run in Sutton Coldfield in the second round, after receiving a bye through the opening day’s action. She then defeated Katie Malliff in a four-game duel, before having to go the distance against No.5 seed Saran Nghiem.

The pair were on court for 63 minutes in the quarter finals, with Mead finding herself 2-1 down. She eventually came through the contest, but she had to win the fifth on a tie-break to make it to the last four.

Another five-gamer followed in the semis against No.6 seed Rana Ismail, and once again, the Englishwoman had to win 12-10 in the fifth to make it through to the final, where she came up against compatriot Torrie Malik.

Mead took the first two games, and look comfortable en route to the title, but Malik fought back to claim the third 13-11, before also taking the fourth to send the match into a decider. However, it was the World No.89 that eventually secured the win in her third five-game contest of the week, taking her second title of 2021.

In the men’s event, Todd came in as the No.2 seed, and after receiving a bye through to the second round, he then got the better of a pair of Welshman to make the semis, downing Peter Creed and No.8 seed Elliott Morris Devred, both in four games.

The Yorkshireman then had to come through a monumental contest with compatriot Joe Lee, with the pair battling it out for over 90 minutes for a place in the final. Todd came from 2-1 down to secure the win, taking the deciding game on a tie-break 18-16.

The final was a much more straightforward task for Todd, as he came up against No.7 seed Miles Jenkins on Saturday in Sutton Coldfield, beating the Englishman in 36 minutes to secure his second crown of the year.
