SRAM PSA 7: Top Seeds Yuen and Arnold Victorious

10 November 2021

Rachel Arnold took her first victory of the year, while Ivan Yuen made it back-to-back-to-back victories on Tour, with the top seeds both victorious at the SRAM PA 7 in Malaysia.

The Challenger 10 tournament was held with domestic entry restrictions, like all those in Malaysia so far this year, with only those players currently based in the country being permitted to enter the event.

Yuen came into the tournament having claimed both the SRAM PSA 5 and SRAM PSA 6 titles in October, and he was the top seed for the Challenger 10 level men’s draw.

After receiving a bye through to the second round of the competition, Yuen then defeated Duncan Lee in straight games to get himself underway, before beating No.6 seed Wee Ming Hock in the quarter finals.

His impressive form continued into the last four, where he got the better of No.5 seed Ong Lai Hung to book his place in the final. No.3 seed Addeen Idrakie would be his opponent, but Yuen claimed the victory after a 44-minute final, coming through the entire tournament without dropping a game, and extending his unbeaten run to 12 matches.

Arnold was featuring on Tour for the first time since the Allam British Open in August, and like Yuen, she also received a bye through to the second round for being the top seed in the event.

She then defeated Jessica Keng and No.7 seed Aika Azman in straight games, before then beating the second of the sisters, Aira, in the semi-finals.

In the final, she came up against the third of the siblings, in No.2 seed Aifa Azman, who had gone 11 matches unbeaten to this point, having won both of the SRAM PSA events in October.

However, it was Arnold who took the victory, after winning a tight four-game battle 11-8, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 in 40 minutes, claiming her first title of 2021, and the fifth of her career.
