Northern Joe Cup Preview: Adderley Aiming To Press On

2 November 2021

The Northern Joe Cup begins on Wednesday afternoon at Cheetham Hill Squash Club, with 48 players across both men’s and women’s draws aiming for glory come the end of the weekend.

The Challenger 5 level tournament will see several members of the top 100 in the World Rankings in action, with seven of those taking part in the women’s draw, while both England’s Nick Wall and New Zealand’s Lwamba Chileshe head up the men’s event.

The Kiwi is joined by compatriot Joel Arscott among the top eight seeds, with Ireland’s Sean Conroy joining four more Englishman, in Charlie Lee, Curtis Malik, Miles Jenkins and Harry Falconer.

Spain’s Cristina Gomez will be the top seed in the women’s draw, with the English trio quartet of Lily Taylor, Grace Gear, Alicia Mead and Torrie Malik also among the top eight seeds.

Welshwoman Ali Loke and Italian No.1 Bruna Marchesi Petrillo will also be in the seeding, along with the lone Scot in the women’s draw, Georgia Adderley.

We spoke to the Scottish No.2 ahead to the event, and she is looking forward to a busy month of action, with a possible four tournaments on her calendar.

“I feel like I am playing some good squash. I had a good bit of time without an event which has been good to improve some areas of my game I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise! I am looking forward to a busy November to see where I am at,” she said.

“I put a lot of work in over COVID both on the court and off and this summer it started to come together. I am keen to press on and get some more titles!”

Adderley will be the No.3 seed for the tournament, and although she is not seeded to reach the final, the Scot is aiming to take her fourth title of the year.

“Going into any event you want to win it. So I want to go and win this week in Manchester. I will take each match at a time and take it from there!” the World No.72 said.

“The ranking takes care of itself if you are doing well in competitions. So for me every event I am playing I am trying to do as well as I can. I would love to be in a position where I can consistently get into Platinum events by the end of the season but I am just taking one event at a time.”

The event takes place from Wednesday 3 to Sunday 7 November at the Cheetham Hill Squash Club in Manchester. Follow the PSA Challenger Tour on Twitter and Facebook for daily updates from the event.

Action from Manchester will be streamed throughout the week on the PSA Challenger Tour YouTube channel, where you can watch Challenger Tour action, and interviews with rising stars.
