Wildcards Cause Upsets on Day Two at the Canadian Championships

It was the wildcards that led the upsets in the second round of the Oxford Properties Canadian Senior Championships as the quarter finalists were confirmed in the women’s and men’s draws on another action packed day in Toronto.

In the women’s draw, wildcard Giselle Delgado continued her confident form following her 3-1 victory over World No.219 Niki Shemirani on day one after she claimed another straight-games win, this time over No.5 seed Catherine Giachino. That win means that she sets up a quarter final meeting with top seed Hollie Naughton after the World No.17 claimed a birthday win as she took just 17 minutes to beat 16-year-old Iman Shaheen 11-2 11-1 11-7.

Former Canadian National Champion Samantha Cornett also recorded a 3-0 victory as she moves through to the quarter finals. Cornett upset the seedings as she beat Hannah Guthrie, the No.8 seed, in an impressive 17 minutes 11-1 11-7 11-2. No. 3 seed Nicole Bunyan will face Cornett in the next round after she progressed following her 3-0 win over Sara Khan.

Molly Chadwick was the other player to cause disruption to the top eight seeds in Canada as she axed World No.295 Amal Izhar, 11-7, 11-0, 11-3, who is ranked 122 places above her in the PSA women’s World Rankings.

Elsewhere, No.2 seed and World No.19 Letourneau also ensured she reached the last eight after she wasted no time in beating Maria Toorpakai Wazir in just 17 minutes. No.6 seed Hannah Blatt awaits Letourneau in the quarter finals after she overcame Sydney Maxwell in a close four games. Blatt took the first game comfortably 11-5 before losing the second to Maxwell 13-11, two successful tie breaks then followed for Blatt as she booked her quarter final slot.

In the men’s draw, wildcards Andrew Schnell and George Crowne secured quarter final berths, along with top two seeds David Baillargeon and Shawn DeLierre, who also got their events off to winning starts in the popular Yorkdale Mall.

Schnell reigned triumphant over World No.245 Cory McCartney in straight-games, while Crowne produced his own dominant performance to down No.8 seed Darosham Khan 11-1, 11-3, 11-4. Schnell and Crowne will face Michael McCue and Nick Sachvie, respectively, for a place in the semi-finals.

The match of the day was between No.2 seed DeLierre and Graeme Schnell. The pair played out an entertaining 76 minute match at the Yorkdale Mall as DeLierre lead twice in the match before Schnell levelled at 2-2. But the No.2 seed pushed on in the fifth game and closed the match out 11-6 in the final game to advance, DeLierre has now set up a quarter final clash with No.6 seed Connor Turk who confidently dispatched Salah Eltorgman 3-0 in 33 minutes.

Top seed David Baillargeon got off to a winning start as he showed his class to fend off Elliot Hunt 11-4 11-5 11-1 in 26 minute to safely make his way through to the quarter finals.
